The Guidance Department seeks to address the needs of students comprehensively by providing programming and services that will help them make an orderly progression through the high school years and prepare for post-graduation endeavors.
"School counselors work with all students, including those who are considered 'at risk' and those with special needs. They are specialists in human behavior and relationships who provide assistance to students through four primary interventions: counseling (individual and group); large group guidance; consultation; and coordination." (American School Counselor Association, 1999.)

It is strongly suggested that each student initiate a meeting at least once a semester with his/her counselor to:
–Discuss the development and implementation of career plans
–Check on progress toward graduation
–Develop and/or adjust class schedule
–Cooperatively solve problems and make decisions.
Academic, career, and life planning is a cooperative endeavor that, at its best, involves those people who play a significant role in a student's life. Students should work cooperatively with parents, teachers, counselors, and community members to move toward achieving desired goals.
The Guidance Department has many resources available to assist in decision-making, such as:
– College catalogs
– Scholarship information
– Part-time job postings
– Computerized career/college information
– Internet links (http://stoningtonhigh.org/guidance)
Students can make individual appointments with their counselor either directly, or by leaving a message with the guidance secretary. Parents are welcome to visit the Guidance Office and can schedule a meeting with a counselor by calling 599-2180.
