Food & Fitness October '08

June 2008, Dear Parents and Guardians, Thank you for your support during the 2007-2008 school year. Our nutrition program is already gearing up for the next school year. Please allow me the opportunity to share some of the new ideas we are planning. We will not be mailing out the September lunch menu and parent information letter in August of this year. Instead, the finalized September lunch menu and bus schedule for the 2008-2009 school year will be available the third week of August on our district website, Stonington.org. Click on the “Home School Connection” for lunch menu and nutrition program information, as well as the bus schedules. You will also find a link for Payschools, our new internet based account review and payment system. Payschools will work in the same fashion as Weblunch, but will have more accurate account balances and enhanced features. I am currently reviewing our programs financial status and forecasting our expenses for the next year. The tremendous increases in the cost of diesel fuel, heating fuel, gasoline, and food that we have all experienced has had a strong impact on our operating cost as well. In order to generate enough income to cover our expenses, we will need to increase our breakfast and lunch prices for next year. Stonington is not alone in this increase. Many districts are increasing the cost of meals by as much as 50%. I have put a tentative price increase on this menu, however, the price for next year will be determined in early July, and will be posted on our finalized September menu. Next year we will be featuring a trans fat free menu. We have obtained a new line of salad dressings, margarine and bakery products that are 100% trans fat free. We are also offering more whole grain and vegetarian items to our customers. As always, fresh fruits and vegetables will be an abundant part of our daily offerings, as well as an improved product line of beef, turkey and chicken items. We strive to offer foods that are tasty, appeal to our customers, and meet or exceed USDA mandated nutritional requirements. My staff and I look forward to meeting your child’s nutritional needs next year, and for their entire time as a student in the Stonington School District. Please feel free to contact me anytime with comments, concerns or questions. Sincerely, Tim Paquette |

I would like to take this opportunity to explain Stonington Public School’s
breakfast and lunch programs. Breakfast is served daily at every school and
includes one serving of fruit of juice, two servings of bread and/or cereal
(or one serving of bread and one serving of protein) and 1⁄2 pint of low-fat
milk. A good breakfast is essential to proper nutrition, aids in concentration
and gets the body up and running. Breakfast supplies the necessary “food
for thought” that all students need! Breakfast prices are:
Elementary School $.75 Middle and High School $1.00
The lunch program offers a different entree every day as indicated on the monthly
menu. Students not wishing to purchase the offered menu entrée may choose
to purchase an alternative lunch, which features a variety of hot and cold sandwiches,
vegetable sticks or salad, fruit and milk. The middle and high schools also
offer additional selections such as pizza, nachos and cheese, chicken nuggets,
steak sandwiches, etc… Additional selections at the high school include
our pasta bar, salad bar, freshly prepared grinder bar, daily grill specials
and more. Lunch prices are increasing this year to:
Elementary $2.00 Middle and High $2.25
For your convenience, we offer several different payment options. Students may
pay daily at the time of service, or open a pre-paid account with any amount
of money. Students using the pre-paid meal option will be assigned a three or
four digit pin number which they will enter into a PIN pad each day they purchase
a meal or milk. Students will not be allowed to use accounts to purchase snacks,
unless a parent submits a permission note with contact phone number. Students
with permission slips will not be allowed to purchase snacks when accounts have
less than a $10.00 balance. Please place all pre-payment cash and checks in
an envelope addressed with students name and pin number. If you do not know
your child’s PIN number, please call Tim Paquette at 599-0766. Checks
can be made payable to: S.P.S. Nutrition Services.
To view account balances and make on line payments visit www.weblunch.net. There
is no fee to review account balances, however, Weblunch charges $2.50 for each
deposit made. Yearly payment, available either on line or by check sent to school,
is $360.00 for elementary lunch and $405.00 for middle and high school. Unused
balances will remain in student’s accounts until the next school year.
Each student will receive a parent letter and application for free and reduced
meals at the beginning of the school year. All eligible parents and guardians
are encouraged to complete the applications. If your child was receiving free
or reduced meals last year, they may continue to do so, however, a new application
must be filed as soon as possible in September. Families on food stamps or TFA
are exempt from filling out an application if they submit to school a “Direct
Certification” letter from the Department of Income Maintenance. If you
have received this letter, please submit it to the school office so your chills
can receive free meals.
