Immunization Update:
It is anticipated that the vaccination against meningitis will become a requirement for 7th grade entry beginning in August of 2010. Meningococcal Disease, commonly known as meningitis, is a potentially fatal bacterial infection. Although it is rare, the disease may be prevented through vaccination. The State of Connecticut requires postural screenings to be conducted for all students in grades 5 through 10. A school nurse will be performing this screening in early April. The purpose of this program is to recognize the signs of spinal curvature at its earliest stages so that the need for treatment can be determined. If the condition is detected early and appropriately treated, progressive spinal deformity can be prevented. The procedure is a simple one, requiring the nurse to examine the student’s spine as he or she stands and then bends forward. If further consultation is recommended, parents will be notified of the findings and will be asked to seek further evaluation from their own physician.
